Aix Island is a tiny island between the main land and Oleron and with the Fort Boyard in between the 2 , was a component of a defense line for the entrance into the Charente river with the town of Rochefort against the royal navy incursions. As this town was a military base when Louis XIV was buidling up the french armed forces in the 1660's.
since 1990 and a few years of renovations, the fort is a the place for a famous TV game show, that almost every european country broadcast. the fort belongs to the council of "charente maritime" which rent it to TV chanels. this fort is of course a very popular touristic destination even though we can't go ON it...
so on our way to a day to Aix island we circled it to have a good look...just like any other touristic boats around...
it was a great day even though we felt a bit like sheep...
no cars on the island...bikes and people..and tourists!
